THE MEDITERRANEAN: A SEA OF CULTURE

Project Recapturing Culture

Presentation: “The Corinth Canal”

PMI Greece Chapter

Abstract

This presentation is a part of the “Recapture Roots” project. It describes the project of the construction of the Corinth Canal in Greece. This is a landmark, a tourist attraction and one the largest construction projects in the country. It was conceived to address the need to create a shorter and safer access from the Aegean to the Ionian Sea, facilitating maritime transportation and commerce. It presents how the project need and investigation originated already in 602 BCE and the original efforts to solve the problem. The presentation continues to illustrate how several factors including resources, different interests of local stakeholders but also economic and geopolitical factors in the greater Mediterranean region lead to its final completion in 1893 CE.

We examine the final result, its specifications and its impact, assessing the benefits realization versus the original project requirements and expectations. Finally, we look into the current assessments for future uses and we attempt to extract lessons learnt.
